Sign of the Times?

Today, I saw a boy who was about 10 years old, riding his bike and talking on a cell phone like it was the most natural thing in the world. Seriously. Come on. What is up with that?

Agreed on that one--what is more amazing is just how quickly all of that has changed. I went into college in 1998 and no one had a cell phone. Even the idea of getting music files over the internet was new. Then, after graduating four years later and returning to the campus as the kids replacing us were just starting, everyone had a cell phone. People were all over the place having their own little static conversations with each other, as if they just couldn't wait to get back to their rooms to make a free call via the internal extension phone system.
I wonder how many of them also have iPods, or when we're going to see the first combination iPod/cell phone come out.

Well, if I had my way my niece would have one and she is only 11. The world just isn't as nice as it used to be and I think sometimes a child having a cell phone offers a parent peace of mind. If your child respects the boundries you set.
